How to protect reprocessing staff against liquid splashes when precleaning medical devices manually or with a steam cleaner?
Abstract
For precleaning the Reprocessing Unit for Medical Devices (RUMED) uses steam cleaners to enhance brushing and swabbing. But their safety for personnel has not been validated. The aim of the present study was to identify for the two methods the areas of the body exposed to liquid splashes and then to define an effective and ergonomic individual and/or collective protection strategy. Tests aimed at visualization of liquid splashes on reprocessing technicians were conducted with fluorescein solutions. Collective protective equipment (CPE) was designed and its effectiveness in protecting against at least 80% of splashes was tested with the same method. This study was able to identify the different exposed areas of the body that were not protected against the splashes. In decreasing order of exposure, these were as follows: the neckline, arms, face, hair and neck. It also helped to design CPE able to stop 96% of splashes and to review personal protective clothing.

Building a culture of quality at the centre of our service
A unique approach to implementing quality improvement in decontamination practice
Abstract
Quality improvement (QI) is the combined and unceasing efforts of everyone to make the changes that will lead to better patient outcomes. In 2017 the Quality Improvement Division took a unique approach to improving the quality of decontamination services by developing a Foundation Programme with the aim of building capacity and capability in Quality Improvement methodologies among decontamination practitioners. The aim of the Foundation Programme for Quality Improvement in Decontamination Practice is to provide an evidence based curriculum that supports the development of QI knowledge and skills that can be used to guide the planning and delivery of services away from crisis management and move towards proactive service improvement.
This article explains the steps that were taken and summarises the concept as well as the outcome.
